1000 Surfboard Graveyard 2011-2013
A creative project about the collection of 1000 broken surfboards to make a graveyard to pay tribute to the relationship between surfers and their favourite surfboards whilst highlighting the unsustainable practices of the surfing industry.
1000 old and broken surfboards were collected from friends, family and factories through word of mouth and media campaigns. The final installation was a public event where people were invited to dig a broken board into the sand during the day and be a part of the monumental installation of waste. By night people were provided with candles to participate in the lighting of the installation.
Initially established as a project for Honours in Graphic Design & Media Arts at The University of Wollongong in 2011. Since then variations of the installation have been included exhibitions for Sculptures by the Sea, Art & About Sydney, Wollongong Art Gallery and Lorne Sculpture Biennale.
In 2015, 1000 Surfboard Graveyard Story was awarded ‘Dukes Day - Short Film Winner', and in 2014, a photograph of 1000 Surfboard Graveyard, won 'Peoples Choice' at Art & About Sydney's ‘Australian Life Photography' exhibition at Hyde Park.
